between the very much married, now former cia director david petraeus and this woman, the also very much married biographer paula broadwell. >> you may know the affair came to light after this woman, 37- year-old jill kelley complained to a friend, an fbi agent. that would be this person here, that she was receiving threatening e-mails, reportedly from broadwell launching an investigation, and that put the lid on this. general john allen, a top commander in afghanistan, the man who took petraeus' place is now being investigated. seems when the fbi was looking into those e-mails, they also found 20 to 30,000 pages of back and forth between jill kelley and allen. some say they're potentially inappropriate, maybe even crossing the line. some say that other than a dear or a sweetheart, there's nothing going on. in another twist, remember that fbi agent, the one who started looking into the threatening e- mails? he's apparently now being investigated for sending shirtless pictures via e-mail over to kelley. he's now off the case. this is jill kelley's twin sister. what does she have to do wit

that led to the down fall of david petraeus. katie marzullo is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: we could hear from president obama this morning, his take on the scandal involving general david petraeus and john allen. the president is holding his first news conference since the election the white house has said the president now stands by allen. we are also seeing the woman at the center of it for the first time since news of her fair with petraeus broke, paula broadwell had a glass of wine at her brother's house. this morning the fbi and cia are expected to brief members of house on what they know. the question many lawmakers have is whether national security was threatened? a source familiar with the case tells abc news that broadwell admitted she took documents from secure government buildings fbi found classified documents on her computer. the other woman jill kelley called 911 last night. she told the operator the media was on her property and tried to use her honorary counsul title to get special treatment. >> i -- they should not be able to cross my property
down cia director david petraeus. this morning defense secretary leon panetta announced the man who succeeded david petraeus is under investigation himself. general john allen, the top u.s. and nato commander in afghan stand is accused of, quote, inappropriate communications with jill kelly. she started the investigation. a senior official traveling with allen says his communications with kelly are under review. the official says general allen disputes engaging in any wrongdoing in the matter. the fbi referred the matter to the department of defense for investigation on sunday. early this morning secretary panetta directed that the defense department inspector general investigate. meanwhile, last night fbi agents went to the home of biographer paula broadwell, the woman government officials say petraeus acknowledged having an affair with. a senior law enforcement official says the search was consensual, not a raid. meanwhile, they said petraeus had hoped to survive the scandal but he was told to resign by james clapper. andrea mitchell broke the petraeus story. she has more on the e

with david petraeus resigning at c.i.a. director. unnamed defense officials say the military is now investigating psibly, quote, inappropriate communications between allen and tampa socialite jill kelley. she had reported getting harassing emails from another woman, paula broadwell. the f.b.i. investigation that followed uncovered broadwell's affair with petraeus. but according to the newest revelations, agents also found extensive contacts between kelley and general allen. the f.b.i. notifieded the pentagon on sunday. last night spokesman george little read a statement from defense secretary leon panetta on a flight to australia. >> today the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. it is now in the hands of the department of the secretary-general. >> brown: early news accounts said allen and kelley exchanged 20,000-30,000 pages of emails and other documents over the last two years. for part of that time the general served as deputy commander at u.s. central command faced at the air force base in tampa.

in afghanistan is implicated in the scandal that brought down now former cia director david petraeus. the pentagon says it is investigating inappropriate communications between general john allen and jill kelley, the woman that petraeus' mistress allegedly sent threatening e-mails to you. the fbi reportedly uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 allegedly inappropriate e-mails between allen and kelley. she's a social liaison at the military base in florida. the general insists he's friends with kelley, but paula broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. the fbi is keeping quiet of a search of broadwell's home. agents searched her home for five hours last night. they left with several boxes. broadwell's relationship with petraeus first came to light when the fbi began investigating jill kelley's claims that broadwell had sent her threatening e-mails. and the fbi is putting together a time line of the investigation to explain to members of congress why they were kept out of the loop until recently. they didn't know about the probe until last tuesday even though it had been going on for mon

in the david petraeus sex scandal. house and senate leaders want to know why they were never given the heads up on the investigation that led petraeus to resign as a cia director over an extramarital affair. with that resignation, petraeus might not have to testify this week at a congressional hearing on the benghazi consulate attack. cnn's barbara starr is following that story from the pentagon. good morning. >> good morning, soledad. well, look, at least at this point, there's no indication publicly of a national security breach. but that doesn't mean the questions aren't growing. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are questioning the timing behind the revelation. house majority leader eric cantor said an fbi employee told him in october about the petraeus affair. by that time an fbi investigation was already under way. the fbi told the director of national intelligence james clapper on election night, according to a senior u.s. intelligence official. the white house says it was notified the day after the election, and the president the following day. that doesn't make sense to house homela
